Executive Summary

The redesign of MinuteKey's kiosk interface resulted in a 76% conversion rate, a 30% increase from the previous version. This significant improvement not only enhanced customer trust but also positioned MinuteKey for a successful acquisition by the Hillman Group. The project underscored the importance of user experience in driving business outcomes, particularly in a market where confidence in technology is crucial.

My Role

As the project lead and UX Director, I was responsible for driving the redesign of the kiosk interface. This role required navigating ambiguity around user needs and technology integration, particularly for smart keys. I collaborated closely with a cross-functional team, including designers, developers, and copywriters, to ensure a cohesive and effective user experience.

Strategy

I led the decision to prioritize a streamlined user interface that emphasized ease of use and clarity. We implemented a prominent animated 'Next' button to encourage users to progress through the key selection process without hesitation. This approach was grounded in the belief that a simplified experience would foster user confidence and ultimately drive higher conversion rates.

Tradeoffs & Tension

A significant tension arose around how much information to provide users about smart key technology without hindering the checkout process. Some team members advocated for more detailed educational content, fearing that users would be confused without it. Ultimately, we decided to compress this information into value proposition slides that displayed while the system loaded, balancing education with a smooth user experience.

Execution

The final design featured a clean, intuitive interface that guided users through the key duplication process. We removed cumbersome elements, such as the 'select a car' map, which had previously overwhelmed users. Instead, we focused on creating a fun and engaging experience that encouraged users to complete their transactions quickly and confidently.

Impact

The redesign led to a 76% conversion rate, a remarkable increase from the previous 46% rate. Additionally, the completion rate for car keys reached 33%, surpassing the expected goal of 20%. These metrics not only validated our design choices but also demonstrated the commercial viability of MinuteKey's kiosk service, contributing to its successful acquisition by the Hillman Group.

Reflection

Looking back, I recognize the missed opportunity to capture baseline user sentiment before the redesign. Having a clearer understanding of user confidence prior to the changes would have strengthened our case for the redesign's effectiveness. In future projects, I would prioritize establishing a pre-launch measure to better gauge user perceptions and validate design improvements.
