Executive Summary

The overhaul of the bundling experience resulted in a remarkable 78% revenue growth for bundled products, significantly enhancing our ability to meet customer needs in the work consumer segment. This initiative was crucial for Ariat, as it not only addressed the absence of a scalable bundling solution but also positioned us to better engage a key target audience that regularly returns for purchases. By implementing a streamlined bundling strategy, we effectively increased our market exposure and sales potential, demonstrating the direct impact of thoughtful design and cross-functional collaboration on business outcomes.

The Challenge

Ariat faced a critical challenge: the lack of a scalable bundling experience limited our ability to cater to the needs of our work consumer segment, a demographic we aimed to grow. The absence of this functionality meant missed opportunities for increased sales and customer engagement. Additionally, the development team was initially hesitant to create this experience due to technical complexities, including concerns about pricing and promotions. This created a high-stakes environment where aligning various teams and overcoming technical barriers was essential to success.

My Role

I led the UX and UI design for the new bundling experience, taking ownership of the entire process from research and benchmarking to execution. My role involved facilitating cross-functional collaboration among marketing, site merchandising, and product teams to ensure a cohesive approach. I navigated significant ambiguity, particularly around technical feasibility and promotional strategies, to create a solution that aligned with both customer needs and business objectives.

Research & Discovery

To inform our bundling strategy, I conducted extensive benchmarking against competitors and analyzed consumer preferences through the Bundling Preference Test. This research revealed a strong demand for bundled offerings and provided qualitative and quantitative insights that shifted our team's perspective on the necessity of this functionality. The evidence underscored the potential for increased sales and customer satisfaction, ultimately convincing stakeholders of the value of investing in a bundling solution.

Strategy

I drove the decision to implement a bundling strategy that leveraged proven merchandising tactics and innovative AI visual strategies. By aligning with cross-functional partners, I ensured that our approach was not only technically feasible but also appealing to our target audience. The strategy focused on creating simple, relevant bundles that minimized decision friction for customers, betting on the idea that a well-curated selection would enhance the shopping experience and drive sales.

Tradeoffs & Tension

One of the most significant trade-offs I faced was the decision to launch with a dollar-off promotion instead of a percentage-off promotion, which was preferred by the marketing and site merchandising teams. The development team expressed concerns about the technical challenges of implementing percentage calculations, leading me to advocate for the dollar-off approach as a more feasible starting point. This decision required careful reasoning and communication to ensure all stakeholders understood the rationale, ultimately leading to a successful launch despite initial disagreements.

Execution

The execution of the bundling experience involved creating a polished user interface that integrated seamlessly with our existing product pages. I collaborated closely with the development team to address technical challenges and ensure that the backend could support the new functionality. Additionally, I utilized AI to generate creative assets, streamlining the process and alleviating pressure on the marketing team. This comprehensive approach resulted in a successful launch that met our timeline and business objectives.

Impact

The impact of the bundling initiative was significant, with bundled products experiencing a 78% revenue growth compared to a 41% growth rate prior to implementation. This substantial increase not only validated our strategy but also demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach in enhancing customer engagement and driving sales. The successful launch of the bundling experience has positioned Ariat to better serve our work consumer segment and capitalize on future growth opportunities.

Reflection

Reflecting on this initiative, I recognize the importance of thorough research and stakeholder alignment in driving successful outcomes. If I were to approach this project again, I would conduct more extensive research into potential product categories, such as Western or equestrian items, to further expand our bundling offerings. This experience taught me the value of balancing technical feasibility with creative marketing strategies, and the need for ongoing collaboration across teams to achieve shared goals.
